Five Favorites (With a Really Crappy Giveaway!)

Joining Hallie again. If I was allowed to have a sixth favorite, it would be the song she has in her number one spot. So beautiful. I've been listening to it on repeat all week. But I'm not allowed to have six favorites, so I'll just get started with my five below.

This post by Jenny. Every post by Jenny actually, but especially that one. She has such a knack for writing about living out your pro-life values in an anti-life world. And a knack for writing in general.

The person who can solve this current parenting dilemma for me. YOU will be my favorite! How do I get Hannah to stop biting her nails and chewing on her fingers? How? I need to know!

"Smile Hannah." "No. I want to be siwwy. Yite dis."

Sweet Potato Fries from a bag. I love all sweet potato fries, but the kind that I don't have to cut up and stand at the stove frying are the best. It goes against my attitude of "don't spend money on something you can make yourself" and I don't care one bit because they are fast and delicious and oh my goodness I just need food in my body right this second! And when you are making dinner and realize you forgot to make a side....sweet potato fries. When you've run out of options for a quick lunch......sweet potato fries. When the baby wants your food and wont stop grabbing it out of your hands.....broken up sweet potato fries to the rescue.

I buy the giant bag at Costco but I've seen them at Walmart too.

This homemade recipe for remoulade. Having been dairy free for the better part of three years now, I can tell you that the desire to dip stuff into something creamy does not go away. I just want ranch!!! Or cream cheese!!! Or queso!! So when I remembered that remoulade is mayonnaise based, I whipped up a batch and starting dipping. Mostly sweet potato fries.

I had never heard of remoulade until we moved to Mississippi. On my first day of training at my new job I went out to lunch with a bunch of beautiful, young, Southern gals with thick accents. They looked at me like I was a freak show when I started eating my food before every.single.person had their food in front of them too. Because apparently that's a thing in the South and it's most certainly not a thing in the North. Not when there are more than a dozen people at the table. And food is being brought out one dish at a time. And we only have a thirty minute lunch break.  But I noted their stares and agape mouths and put my fork down and sat and watched my food get cold like everyone else. So later when I asked, "What's remoulade??"they had no trouble just writing me off as a rude Northern weirdo who didn't know her Cajun food.  I think I put my elbows on the table too. They, on the other hand, did not.

Unrelated picture of Paul. Also being "siwwy"

This book on potty training. Oh Crap Potty Training by Jamie Glowacki. I read it months ago and totally forgot that the author offered to do a giveaway for readers of this here blog. I pulled it back out this week because we are going to start night training Hannah now and I wanted to refresh myself with her tips. For us, her method worked like a charm. I appreciated the wealth of informaiton and the tips on common mistakes. I totally would have said, "it's ok!" every time Hannah had an accident when, really, it's not ok. That's why we're teaching you to use the potty! So instead I followed her advice of just stating the obvious ("You peed on the floor.") and reminding her what to do ("We pee in the potty now.")

I liked that she doesn't use food as a reinforcer and found that to be super successful for Hannah. It was a much more logical approach than the sticker charts and candy and it worked for us.

The most helpful was her guidelines for determining if your child is ready. I wish I had read it sooner because Hannah was definitely ready a few months before we finally started. And if we had read it earlier I would have had a potty trained toddler before the new baby arrived and wouldn't have been messing with potty training while caring for a five week old.

If you want to win it, enter below! And if you don't win, you should just buy it. It was actually a fun read and I read it cover to cover in one sitting and then went back to digest the important parts. Her language is pretty rough, but I kind of enjoyed it. She did use some curse words as a warning for those who may not like that. And God's name in vain a few times, which made me sad. Because there are so many better ways to say things without stooping to that level, ya know?

But overall, good book. Super helpful. Go win it! a Rafflecopter giveaway

  1. Sorry, I don't have any experience to share about nail biting:( Hope someone has something useful! (Or you could try a drop of lemon juice on her nails and see if that is a deterrent!

  2. John Paul went through a random finger/nail biting phase when he was around that age... Eventually he got so distressed (because it HURT and he was making himself bleed) that he stopped on his own, but not after quite a bit of concern on our part. How long has it been going on? It might just be one of those things that passes, like teeth grinding. Or it might be a more lasting issue that actually needs to get addressed...

  3. For my daughter, we painted her nails with a favorite nail polish that she picked out and told her that you can't bite nails that are polished. It seemed to work. I've also heard about putting bandaids on her fingertips as a deterrent.

  4. I need to potty train ASAP. Boy 2 is outgrowing his newborn diapers (OK he probably did a few months ago but I keep stuffing him in) so Boy 1 needs to get out of the bigger size :-)

  5. And I guess my email wasn't linked to the one above so trying again.

  6. I'm embarking on potty training again soon and I'm not excited about it. It was a real challenge with my son who was potty trained mere months before turning 4. Ugh! I do not want to change diapers on these next kids until they are that old...and I don't think my cloth diapers will fit until they are that big either. With my son I didn't really have a technique that I followed, which was probably a mistake. I'd really like to have a better plan this time around.

  7. I LOVE those Alexia sweet potato fries! I also love that when you read the ingredients on most of their stuff you actually know what the things are! Bonus, I've found coupons for their products several times!

I was a nail biter as a kid and my mom always threatened a nail polish-like product that tasted bad. I don't know if it really existed, or if it works, or if it's the kind of thing you actually want your kids to be licking...but maybe a solution?

  8. I hate potty training. Right now E wants to try out every other potty but the ones we have at home. :(

    Love the sweet potato fries!!

  9. There is a bittering agent you can get to put on fingers. I sadly bite my nails until I got braces. I wanted braces so badly (weird I know) and the information packet said biting nails can mess the braces up and it was cold turkey. I would maybe try lotion?

  10. I would love this to help with potty training my oldest before baby #3 comes in May!

  11. I'm totally wondering how/when we'll get in on the potty train...I'm pretty sick of washing toddler diapers. Those things are serious.

  12. You are funny. And honestly, I have no pitty for Hannah biting on her fingers because my FIVE YEAR OLD picks his nose and EATS IT. I honestly didn't know that was a thing. It is totally disgusting and he does it in secret and I have NO IDEA WHAT TO DO ABOUT IT. Arrrrrrrgh!!!!!!! (ok, thanks for letting me get that out!)

My girl is I think 3 mos younger than Hannah and I have been waiting and waiting til I think she's ready (getting close) so I'd love to check out the book. My girl also loves to be "siwwy." :)

    I love Audrey.

Ok, that is all for my random set of comments. :)

  13. I don't need the book. :) I got pretty dang lucky. MG potty trained pretty easily. We're going to be transitioning her to a big girl bed next month and then the night training will begin. :)

As far as the nail biting goes. My sister was really bad about it. She would bite them until they bled and still kept doing it. I'm not sure how to make her stop. My dad tried everything, including rubbing hot sauce on the tips of her fingers to make them spicy. I'm sure that's considered child abuse now. It didn't seem to work either. She bit her nails until she was in high school.

  14. Have you tried dipping her fingertips in vinegar? Every time you catch her, dip again. They taste awful and smell bad too. She won't like it and it could help her decide to stop.

  16. Do you notice Hannah biting and chewing when she is nervous or just anytime in general? If you suspect it is a nervous/fidgety thing maybe you could get her a fun clunky bracelet and encourage her to play with that instead and redirect her to the bracelet anytime she starts to bite her nails and chew her fingers. Good luck! Melissa

  17. Oooooh I defintitely want to check out those sweet potato fries. I have been considering going dairy free to see if it helps my three month old. I think we may have resolved the problem with correcting an oversupply of milk. I don't know how you do it! We are gluten free and the thought of cutting out dairy on top of it is enough to make me pull out my hair when meal planning. I would love the potty book. I was just looking into some today. My oldest turned two yesterday and since the birth of his little sister any attempt at potty training has been a nightmare. . .

  18. My oldest is 19 months old and I have been thinking recently... How do I even begin potty training?!

  19. I would love to win the book! I think my daughter is getting close to ready and with a baby on the way.... but I just dont know where to start!

  20. I hear something called Mavala Stop is great for stopping finger/thumb sucking and nail biting.... Good luck!

  21. Abigail liked the Mavala stop stuff. Though the directions specifically say don't use under 3 b/c their taste buds haven't developed enough and they might like the stuff. I haven't tried it since she turned 3. Vinegar sounds interesting. I can see Gianna not liking that.

The title of your give away. Classic.

  22. I bit my nails until middle school when I just decided it was gross. I don't know that my parents ever tried the gross finger thing though. Vinegar seems like a pretty strong deterrent.

  23. I would also love to know how to get my son to stop chewing his nails! The book would be great before #2 is ready to potty train.
