I read this tip in the comment section of a blog post when I was pregnant with Hannah and boy oh boy was I glad I did! Buy the most expensive toilet paper you can find. Take a role to the hospital. Use the rest at home. Because really-the time for using crappy one ply toilet paper is NOT hours after you give birth.

I have an extreme amount of pity for any nursing mother who wasn't told about lanolin when they started nursing. The last thing our doula said before leaving us when Hannah was born was, "Lanolin. Both sides. Every single time." And I listened. I had virtually no pain with Hannah and am only having some with Paul (i.e. cussing only once or twice per day) Waiting until your nipples are cracked and bleeding is NOT the time to go out and get some lanolin. Have it ready. Use it liberally.

I love these nursing tanks from Target. I bought two with Hannah and am still using them (although they're slightly stained from all the lanolin). I have one in black for wearing by itself and one in cream-which is good for wearing under clothes. I've lived in them from the time we got to our postpartum room until now-with no end in sight. I wash them both almost every single day because they are usually covered in spit up and breastmilk. If you can afford it-get three or four. Order them small, they stretch out a bit. I have one with "side slings" and one with holes cut out for your boobs. I like the side sling one better-the extra fabric on the other gets in the way sometimes. Absolutely could not survive the messy months of nursing without them.

A sweet blogger friend gifted me with a postpartum care kit from Earth Mama Angel Baby when I was pregnant with Hannah. I had no idea what a perfect gift it was until I started using it. This bottom balm was essential in healing from my tear, these bath herbs were wonderful when added to a sitz bath, but this spray was absolutely amazing. I only have the balm and herbs leftover for this time around and I really wish I had the spray. This would make a great gift for a pregnant friend!

I had no idea this little gem existed with my first nursing go-around. Oh how I wish I had! I think it could have saved us months of agony from oversupply. Not to mention the hours I could have NOT been pumping had I known about it. It's a Milkies Milk Saver (click for link) and it does just that. It saves the milk that leaks out from the breast that's not attached to the baby. The first time I used it I got 2.5 ounces in just a single 15 minute nursing session. That's an entire lady's night out! Effortlessly! In only a few days I've managed to stock 33 ounces of breast milk in the freezer. If this keeps up, I won't ever have to pump. Ever. Granted, I'm not working full time like I was with Hannah. I probably would have had to pump a little then-but it's likely it would only have been one time a day.
And if I thought this thing was awesome yesterday-today I'm even more in love. I skipped it last night because I was too lazy to walk back into the kitchen before crawling in bed. I've been engorged all day-it has been saving me of this discomfort and I didn't even know it! I think this is because I'm letting all that extra milk out rather than smashing my unused breast to try to stop it.I'm not soaked when I get up from nursing. I'm not pumping to have a supply for the times I need to be separated from Paul. I'm not engorged and uncomfortable. It's a win-win (win-win-win-win....).

I'm cheating and adding a sixth favorite.
This guy.
He makes all the postpartum trouble worth it.
Any other postpartum essentials that I've missed? I'm really wanting to try reusable breast pads this time around (so I can stop buying the disposables every time I turn around) but want to know if they really work. I tried the cheapos from Walmart with Hannah and felt like I had wet rags in my bra all day. Anyone know of a brand that really works? Tell me about your favorite postpartum items in the comments!

Thanks :) I'm glad you posted this but what is that egg thing called for the milk saving i may need to look into this :)
ReplyDeleteThanks and the last is my fav. he is SOOO stinkin SWEET i want to come visit!!! would be a GREAT summer vaca spot i need to run this by Jeff ASAP! :)
Great post! Is the milk catcher thing reusable? Where did you buy it?
ReplyDeleteOh next time I have to get the Earth Mama Angel Baby stuff! It sounds marvelous! I have some of their milkmaid tea (love it) and their boob tubes (that just makes me laugh).
ReplyDeleteI highly suggest cloth nursing pads. I despise the disposable ones. I wear them every day to work (just in case a meeting runs late and pumping gets pushed back a bit too far... eek).
Also? I big-time suggest a big water cup/bottle with a big straw. I got so thirsty nursing, so keeping a Nalgene or something similar nearby at all times really helped!
The Milk Saver is reusable! It's all some type of plastic that can be rinsed and used over and over and over again. I got it off Amazong.
ReplyDeleteKate-what type did you use? I tried the cheap ones and they were just terrible. Have you tried Bamboobies?
I have two kinds of reusable breast pads but they were both hand-me-downs and so I don't know where they came from. I think they work equally well though they are different sizes and made from different fabric.
ReplyDeleteI will say this, though, I have to wait until my milk supply evens up a bit before I can use them - otherwise they're drenched by mid morning. I use the disposable until I can make the switch.
For any first time mom - or anyone who experiences the same raw intense nipple pain on the 2nd-3rd-4th etc go-round- I TOTALLY recommend the nursing gel pads for relief from sore nipples!!! (I had just weaned my older one a few months before my 2nd so I don't think my pain was as intense.) I got the tip to put them in the FRIDGE to cool them off first and believe me, it was heavenly after about 24 hrs of suffering intensely. They are disposable and a little pricy, but you can rinse them off and resuse them through a day or 2 (says in the packaging) and I think a couple pair come in a pack. I think I used them about 4-5 days post-partum - just to get over the hup of the worst part of "breaking in" my nipples. (tmi?) :) Must-have!!
ReplyDeleteI use real lanolin instead of medula stuff. It's amazing and so much better. Heals quicker too!
ReplyDeleteI wear those target tanks the whole time I'm nursing. I have them in all my sizes from XL - S!! Lol
I've never needed a nursing pad my whole time. That just amazes me about milk leaking. Lol
ReplyDeleteI've tried a few brands of the washable nursing pads and haven't found one that can hold the amount that I leak. The only ones that work for me are the lansinoh disposables. If you find one that works let me know! I hate spending money on the disposables!
ReplyDeleteLOVE the milk saver! LOVE IT!!!
LOVE those nursing tanks. Keep you eye out on Target's daily deals. I see them pop up on there are the time for cheap and that's when I stock up. I'm like Sew, I have them in almost every size.
I've gotta know, is Paul in the learning tower or a cool ikea bassinet? What is that?
ReplyDeleteI wish I had known about that Milk Saver about six months ago! With each of my babies, I feel like the milkman...I've got enough and then some! haha I'm definitely keeping this in mind if there's ever a baby #5 :)
ReplyDeleteI'm a huge fan of the Lana wool pads. Seriously awesome. You only need one pair - if they need washed you can let them dry for about a day - I hate going back to disposable pads in the meantime! They are so comfortable and hold a lot of milk (especially once your supply evens out.) I love the Target tanks too - I wear one literally every day.
ReplyDeleteSomeone gave me some reusable nursing pads and I have one pair that is my favorite. They are cotton on one side (breast side) and fleece on the other. They were the only ones that didn't leak through when I had heavy leaking! And they fit nicely under clothing (smooth not bumpy). I don't know where they came from but I need to find more! I also used lots of disposables in the early days, especially when going out and about.
ReplyDeleteMilkies Milk Savers!!! How cool is that!!!! I have never seen those but the look AWESOME!!!!
ReplyDeleteI used cheap reusable breast pads for a long time but they lasted 30 minutes double layered and were yucky! I finally ordered some 5 layered pads from http://www.milkdiapers.com/ and really loved them.
Paul is adorable!!!!
That milk saver looks amazing. I will need to get one. I do so much pumping those first few weeks and would love to cut down a bit.
ReplyDeleteI use lansinoh disposables the first few weeks postpartum just because I leak so very much. I think I need about a box or so and then I just use the NUK brand cotton ones. They were cheap and they worked for me, just not right away.
Wow. This is really helpful. I didn't need any of these for baby #1 but I'm thinking now it's likely I will for the twins... maybe. I even had Lanolin and never had to use it with Thomas. Is that crazy? Also never had an oversupply or leakage. Thanks to all the comments I see here, I'm thinking I was blessed and didn't even realize it. I'll keep these items on my super long lists of wants/needs/possibilities. Thanks, Katie!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE those nursing tanks too! I still wear one every day. And Charmin ultra soft is the only TP allowed in the Hebrews house. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for this post, I know a lot of expectant mamas right now and now have some gift ideas!
